On Tuesday 10th July the Whangamata Girls Rugby
Team spent the day with current and ex Black Fern players (New Zealand Women’s
Rugby Team). The girls went through a morning of skills and drill sessions
before playing a match against Mercury Bay Area School. The game was watched
closely by the Black Ferns and former Black Fern Coach Darryl Suasua with advice and coaching given
throughout. Whangamata lost the game but were thrilled to score their first
ever tries.
The girls have never played rugby before
and have been committed to training twice a week since March. They are looking
forward to the start of the Girls competition in September and are hoping to
secure sponsorship before then. This year will see the first 10- aside
competition before moving into a 15 aside tournament in October.
